Annual Chapter Reports

Washington Pi Chi

Early in 1949 a group of seniors in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Washington University recognized the advantages of a chapter of Pi Tau Sigma. A petition was presented to the National Council and on May 6, 1949, the Washington Pi Chi Chapter was formally installed by the National Secretary-Treasurer.

Members of the Washington Pi Chi Chapter act as tutors for undergraduate students who encounter difficulty with their courses. Through this tutoring program and through a newly instituted Pi Tau Sigma award for the outstanding juniors, the chapter helps to uphold the high scholastic reputation of the Washington University School of Engineering. Included in the chapter's plans for each year are joint events sponsored with the student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The officers of the PTS society invite eligible students of Mechanical engineering to become members of the society, conduct the initiation ceremony, organize lunch for the attendees of the meeting, and coordinate in getting the cords and stoles for eligible graduating students.

The student members are considered as one of the constituents for the Mechanical Engineering program.  The members take active role in reviewing the Program Educational Objectives (PEO) for Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) Program.  They complete a survey as part of the PEO review process for ABET.

Some of them serve as course assistants to sophomore or junior mechanical engineering courses and help the course instructors in grading the homework, and/or tests.  In addition to that they help in assessment of graded student work for ABET accreditation.

The members also serve on Student Advisory Board.  The department Chair coordinates the board and seek information on curriculum, faculty teaching, pedagogical methods, learning effectiveness, facilities, laboratory equipment and feedback for continuous improvement of program.
