Naval Academy Delta Psi

In the fall of 1976, Dr. Vincent J. Lopardo (Pittsburgh Tau), Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department, set a high priority on establishing a Pi Tau Sigma chapter at the Naval Academy. Under Assistant Professor Kenneth F. Read's (Georgia Tech Nu) guidance a petition for a charter was submitted to the national office. Associate Professor William M. Lee (Pittsburgh Tau) and Lieutenant Marshall W. Graves, JT. (Michigan Pi Rho) then became the faculty advisors. With the assistance of Maryland Tau Mu, midshipmen were initiated into the Alpha Omega Chapter in the springs of 1978 and 1979.

On March 20, 1980, the national officers of Pi Tau Sigma formally inaugurated the Delta Psi Chapter. Drs. Suresh Chandra, President; Joseph R. Gartner, Vice President; and Hudy Hewitt, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer; presented Pi Tau Sigma's charter to Rear Admiral William P. Lawrence, Superintendent of the Naval Academy. Thirty midshipmen of the class of 1980 and 1981 were then initiated as the charter members of the Delta Psi Chapter.

The Delta Psi. Chapter's services to the Mechanical Engineering faculty and students include voluntary tutoring, mechanical engineering major briefings for plebes, assistance during Parents' Weekends, and a noon lunch speaker program.
 

ANNUAL SUMMARY REPORTS

2018 -  2019

This past year the Delta Psi chapter supported USNA’s Mechanical Engineering department in a few different ways. Several chapter members participated in the Engineering Division information open house for the freshman class to familiarize the students with the engineering program. Following each induction ceremony, the chapter officers discussed the current state of the Mechanical Engineering program and offered suggestions to improve it as well as suggestions for getting information out to freshmen so that they could make an educated decision when choosing their major. Additionally, the members voted to nominate the Mechanical Engineering Professor of the Year for the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The chapter also cast votes for the Pi Tau Sigma Outstanding Performance and Service Awards as well as for the 2021 National Convention. In order to better organize the chapter, a google drive, managed by the chapter’s officer representative was created. Important templates, documents and records were stored there to improve continuity between new and graduating members. A binder with paper records was also created as a backup should the google drive get deleted.
