Saint Martin's Alpha Tau

The Mechanical Engineering degree program at Saint Martin's University was accredited by ABET on October 1, 1992. Dr. Victor Goldschmidt, the Pi Tau Sigma International President, contacted us in 2002 after ABET accreditation and also visited us to survey Saint Martin’s College (the institution changed from college to university status in 2005). The student chapter president, Cecil Ramsey, and the faculty advisor, Dr. Isaac Jung, attended the 82nd national convention at the University of Maryland in College Park. Saint Martin’s Alpha Tau chapter was approved at that convention.

On April 3, 2003, Dr. Goldschmidt came back to the Saint Martin’s and instituted the charter and performed the first initiation.  In the chapter diary, he described the first initiation dinner and recorded the process.  He wrote “Prior to the initiation of the first members, our honorary faculty member was initiated by the international Pi Tau Sigma representative.  He then initiated the officers who in turn initiated the general members.”

Dr. Goldschmidt continued his narrative with “The tables were covered with white table cloths with red centerpiece underlay. Napkins were red as well. At the center of each table was a gold candle holder with a long slender red candle that was lit just prior to the initiating proceedings. To start the evening, the president welcomed everyone and [asked] Father Bede to give the opening blessing. Following the blessing, the president invited everyone to self-serve at the buffet of chicken breast with red potatoes, vegetable tray, and chocolate cake.”

Twelve charter members were initiated as well as one honorary member.  Students brought their guests.  Father Bede blessed the charter dinner and he has been blessing for Pi Tau Sigma ever since.
